# Projects in Beacon

> Give Beacon a home for one body of work: its chats, instructions, context and memory.

A Project in Beacon is the same Project you see everywhere else in Saphion. It holds Actions, files and conversations for one body of work. Beacon's Project page is where the conversations, instructions, context and memory for that work live. Everything else about the Project, such as its Actions and who can open it, is described in [Projects](https://docs.saphion.co.uk/work/projects.md).

## Open a Project's page

In Beacon's sidebar, choose a Project's row to open its page. The arrow beside the row folds and unfolds the chats beneath it. To start a new Project, use **New project** in the sidebar.

The page shows:

* The Project's name and description, and a menu with **Project settings** and **Archive**.
* A box to start a chat, labelled "New chat in" the Project's name. A chat started here is filed in the Project.
* **Recents**: your own chats in the Project, plus chats other people have shared into it. Shared chats show who started them. Rows are ordered by last activity.
* A side panel with **Instructions**, **Context** and **Memory**, and a label saying who can see the Project: **Private** or **Your Organisation**.

## Chats are private until shared

Members of a Project share its instructions, files and memory, but each person's chats stay private to them. To let the Project see a chat, share it into the Project from the chat's **Share** menu. Everyone who can see the Project can read a shared chat, but only the person who started it can continue it. The person who started it can stop sharing it or delete it, and so can someone who can manage the Project. See [Chat with Beacon](https://docs.saphion.co.uk/beacon/chat.md).

## Instructions

Choose **Instructions** to add or edit what Beacon should always know when working on this Project, such as the audience, tone or standards. Instructions can be up to 12,000 characters.

Beacon combines three layers in a Project chat. Your Organisation's instructions come first, and win if they directly conflict. The Project's instructions come next. Your own instructions fill any gaps. See [Instructions](https://docs.saphion.co.uk/admin/instructions.md).

## Context

**Context** holds the files Beacon should draw on for this Project. Add a file with **Upload**. The Context window shows each file and how much capacity is left.

## Memory

**Memory** shows what Beacon has saved for the Project. It belongs to the Project, so everyone who works in it benefits.
