# Instructions

> Tell Beacon how to work for your Organisation, for a Project and for yourself.

Instructions are standing guidance that Beacon follows in every chat. There are three layers, and they combine.

| Layer | Who writes it | Where | Limit |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Organisation** | Organisation Admins | **Settings > Instructions** | 12,000 characters |
| **Project** | People who can edit the Project | The **Instructions** panel on the Project's [Beacon page](https://docs.saphion.co.uk/beacon/projects.md) | 12,000 characters |
| **Personal** | You | **Settings > Account**, under **Instructions for Beacon** | 2,000 characters |

## How the layers combine

The Organisation's instructions apply to everyone. Projects and each person add to them. Where two layers directly conflict, the Organisation's instructions win, and then the Project's. Your personal instructions fill any gaps.

In a Project chat all three apply. In a chat outside a Project, the Organisation's and your own apply.

## Write Organisation instructions

Open **Settings > Instructions** (in the Organisation group). Only an Admin can open and change them. Enter the guidance in the box and save it.

Good Organisation instructions describe things that are true for everyone, such as:

* The terms your Organisation uses, and the ones to avoid.
* How you want documents and replies written.
* What Beacon should check or ask before it acts.

Keep them short and specific. If you go over the limit, Saphion tells you how many characters to remove before it will save.

## Write your own

Open **Settings > Account**. There you can also set what Beacon calls you and your job title. Your instructions apply across your chats, under your Organisation's and any Project's. A short example is "keep explanations brief and to the point".

## Instructions are not permissions

Instructions guide how Beacon works. They do not widen what Beacon can open, and they cannot override a person's permissions or a connector's tool ceiling. See [Connectors](https://docs.saphion.co.uk/beacon/connectors.md).
